People lose skills if they do not use them regularly. An
ongoing program of training and refresher training will
usually be necessary for all drivers and other employees, to
make sure their skills continue to be up to date.
650
Even if drivers often operate vehicles, we recommend
regular refresher training to make sure that drivers:
• maintain good driving habits;
• learn new skills where appropriate; and
• reassess their abilities.
651
You should consider a gap between training and refresher
training of between three to five years, depending on the
risks. Some companies provide refresher training more often
than this.

Experienced
Operators to be Refreshed
There is now a strong guide
line to provide refresher training after set
intervals, as even trained and experienced lift-truck operators need to be
re-assessed from time to time, to ensure that they continue to operate lift
trucks safely. This assessment, which should form part of a firm’s normal
monitoring procedure, and be formally time-tabled, to ensure that it is done
at suggested regular intervals indicating when and what type of further
training may be needed. In addition to routine safety monitoring,
re-assessment might be appropriate where operators have not used
trucks for some time, are occasional users, appear to have developed unsafe
working practices, have had an accident or near miss, or there is a change
in their working practices or environment. Employers are advised to have a
central recording system for training records and this should include re-assessment in safety
training using these records. Employers can, of
course, decide that automatic retraining after a set period of time is the
best way of ensuring that employees are adequately trained but, where this
approach is adopted, it will still be necessary to monitor performance in
case re-training is required before the set period ends. The guiding
principle is that employers need to maintain the competence of operators
to use lift trucks safely through a laid down, formal process of
monitoring and assessment.
When the
Workplace transport safety
(Employers'
guide) was
issued it stated a gap of 3-5 years should be considered as a
recommendation when an operators driving skills may
need to be assessed. It is also recommended for operators who
are coming back to driving after a
lay off period, or have not driven for a while, or just need reminding of safe driving
practices attends this course.
Our recommendation
to you is.....
This course can be used to maintain a high standard
of skill level. we try to encourage this from your drivers. We even have a scheme where we award a
special prize to your best driver of that batch of refreshers. (A model fork lift !! What
Else??) This is only done by prior arrangement with you. Some firms have a rolling policy of training so that every employee required to drive will
have a refresher every 3-5 years of their career with that company. We can administer a
rolling training program for you. That may full-fill your training
needs. |

Certification & Testing
At the end of most courses the standard
Accrediting Bodies Forum 2000 practical and the theoretical test where
possible will be conducted for for trucks covered under the Approved
Code of Practice. This is
the current recognised and recommended standards practical operators
test, agreed by all HSE recognised accredited bodies. For all other
classes the ITSSAR standards test will be applied where
appropriate. Operators are issued with an encapsulated wallet and full
sized certificate. Companies are issued with an A4 sized certificate,
the trainees original practical and theoretical test marking sheet,
course record and written trainee report where appropriate, as proof of
training. |
