HSE Approved First Aid at Work Course –
Employers are obliged under the Health
and Safety First Aid Regulations 19 81 and ( Approved
Code of Practice ACOPL74 ) to make adequate provision for their
workforce. It is recommended that there is at least one first aider who
has completed either a 1day or 3day
Emergency First Aid at Work course. Employers should
carry out risk assessments at all working locations to establish what
level of First Aid Training is required. Whilst carrying out these
assessments it is important that lone workers and all shift patterns are
taken into account..
Emergency First Aid at Work ( Appointed Person ) is required for:
Up to 50 Low Risk categories ( e.g shops and offices ) Up to 20 Medium Risk categories ( e.g warehouses, food processing
and light engineering ) Up to 5h High Risk categories ( e.g construction, dangerous
machinery and chemical manufacturing.
First Aider is required for:
50 - 100 employees in Low Risk categories
20 - 100 employees in Medium Risk categories
5 - 50 employees in High Risk categories
Additional First Aider is required for :
Every 100 employees in Low Risk and Medium Risk categories
Every 50 employees in High Risk categories

The HSE brought in major changes to first aid within the workplace
and as of 1st October 2009 the duration of this course was reduced to 3
days from the previous 4 day format.
The course is suitable for organisations in the higher risk category. Minimum of 18 hours (normally run over 3 days)HSE Approved courses which are available
for aged 16 years and over which can be completed in 3 days either
consecutively, or spread over several weeks to suit your needs. All
individuals who are successful in completing the course will receive a
First Aid at Work Certificate in accordance with HSE guidelines, which
is valid for 3 years. At the end of the course candidates will be
competent in the following:
- First Aid Requirements required by law
- Regulations
- Aims and Objectives of first aid
- Simple record keeping
- Managing an incident
- Dealing with accidents and illness
- Basic life support CPR
- First aid priorities
- Prioritising casualties
- What is required in a first aid kit
- Resuscitation
- Treatment of an unconscious patient
- Examining casualty

- Control of bleeding
- Burns and Scalds
- Poisoning

Who should attend?
Any person, who has been designated by their employer at work.
All employers in the UK have a legal obligation under Safety at Work
Act 1974 to make First Aid provision for their workforce.

The knowledge and confidence to deal with many first aid issues
Course Duration?
3 days (or total of 18 hours instruction maximum 12 delegates) If held
at our training centre, tea and coffee will be provided and kitchen
facilities are also available.
Assessment
Practical skills test to include:
CPR, Care of an unconscious casualty and control of bleeding. Recovery
position Bandaging
Certificate
A First Aid at Work certificate in accordance with the HSE guidelines
valid for three years issued on completion of assessment. Before expiry
of this certificate, students must undertake a refreshment course,
which will re-qualify them for a further three years. The HSE recommend
that at the end of the first and second year a 3 hour refresher is
completed to keep skills learned updated.

The First Aid at Work courses are held at your own premises, with a

Where an employer's assessment of First Aid needs
identifies that a First Aider is not necessary, the minimum requirement
is to appoint a person to take charge of first aid arrangements. This 6
hour course meets the requirements for an Appointed Person in the
workplace as specified in the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations
1981 and is valid for three years.
This course is primarily aimed at
smaller workplaces that present potentially fewer health and safety
risks, where a nominated individual is required to take charge in the
event of illness or accident or that nominated person might assist the
First Aider. These fully qualified First Aiders in larger organisations
can also benefit from additional support from Appointed Persons. This is
especially relevant where the workplace may consist of many floors,
cover a large site or where work is operated in shift patterns.What they will learn?

qualified First Aiders
Course Duration
6 hours. This course can also be held at your own premises, however, a
minimum of six candidates is required for this. If held at our training

Certificate
Valid for 3 years is issued on successful completion of assessment.

When the 3 years is nearly expired, if the First Aider
wishes to continue with their position, they must attend a First Aid
Training course called a First Aid at Work.
Re-Qualification. (
Refresher Course )
Please note that if your certificate has already expired,
you will be required to attend the full 3 day First Aid at Work training
course.
This is a two day course and aims to cover all the
areas covered on the First Aid at Work Training course, with time to
revise and practice.
